Amparo

Simón Mesa Soto

Synopsis

Colombia, 1998. Amparo’s eldest son, Elías, is now 18 years old and has been drafted into compulsory military service and assigned to a remote battalion in a conflict zone. Amparo, unwilling to see her boy taken away, contacts a man who can turn the tables by securing a military ID for Elías on the black market. The cost of this illegal transaction, however common in Colombia in those days, is nevertheless too high for a working-class single mother. Amparo has just one day to prevent the departure of her son and the decision she must make forces her to face a society governed by men, corruption, and war and to question her values as a mother and a woman.
